From poets and playwrights to novelists and humorists, writers across Sullivan County and the Upper Delaware River Valley are creating in their own corners of the region. Bizzy Coy wants to help them find one another.
The writer, humorist and New Yorker cartoonist is hosting the third annual Writers Hobnob, an informal gathering for writers at every stage of their careers. She’s also compiled Footnotes, a free, 36-page guide to local writing groups, publication opportunities, grants and other resources — a directory of the literary community that’s already here, and an invitation to help it grow.
Coy says the idea for the Hobnob began about three years ago, when she realized how many writers were working independently throughout the region.
“I was shocked that people showed up who I’d never met before, who were writers in the county,” Coy said of the first gathering. “And it was nice to know, wow, there’s a huge community here, and it continues to grow.”
The event welcomes published and unpublished writers, as well as poets, playwrights, fiction writers and others. There’s no formal program or structured agenda — just an opportunity to meet people, exchange ideas and share resources.
Coy says those connections can be particularly valuable for writers, whose work often involves long stretches of solitude. Attendees at previous gatherings have found writing partners and critique partners.
She compiled Footnotes after starting a personal list of literary opportunities and resources she wanted to remember. As the list grew, she decided to share it with the wider community.
“I was surprised,” Coy said. “I said, oh my gosh, there’s so much happening in the county and the Upper Delaware River Valley region in general.”
The guide includes information on literary publications, writing grants, residencies, book clubs, readings and other creative opportunities. Coy hopes it will help people discover what’s already available while encouraging further collaboration.
Rather than calling herself a leader of the local literary scene, Coy prefers the term “community connector.”
The next Writers Hobnob takes place Sunday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon at The Collective, a coworking space at 6 Beaverbrook Road in Yulan. The event is free, and no RSVP is required.
Free copies of Footnotes will be available at the gathering, as well as at One Grand Books in Narrowsburg and Litt Home & Book in Callicoon.
Coy welcomes suggestions for future editions of the guide and invites bookstores and libraries interested in distributing free copies to contact her at bizzycoy@gmail.com.
