The Margaretville Cauliflower Festival returns on Saturday, Sept. 19. 

The annual event returns for its 22nd year to celebrate the beloved local crop. Margaretville was once a major commercial producer of cauliflower from the 1890s to mid-1900s and was referred to as ‘white gold’ to local farmers and residents.

The local festival is organized by Garth Kravits and Julia Rugg, founders of the local performing arts nonprofit Margaretville Arts Center.

“It’s a time to celebrate the history of Margaretville, to celebrate farming and agriculture, but of course, mostly to celebrate cauliflower,” said Kravits.

The festival will include a historical section detailing the region’s climate, soil, and farmers that shaped the crop’s history, along with cauliflower-forward dishes, arts and craft vendors, and family-friendly activities.

Rugg says she’s looking forward to sharing the event’s programming with both local residents and tourists. “We have really found happiness in showing people what is so special about the western Catskills.”

The Margaretville Cauliflower Festival will take place on Saturday, Sept 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Village Park.

Some local restaurants will have cauliflower-forward dishes on their menus on Friday, Sept. 18, and Cafe Mornings in Arkville will host a cauliflower-inspired brunch on Sunday, Sept. 20.
