Cold-Weather Life Jacket Requirement Begins Nov. 1 on Upper Delaware River

Boaters, canoeists and kayakers on the Upper Delaware River will be required to wear a life jacket beginning Nov. 1 as part of Pennsylvania’s cold-weather boating safety regulations.

The mandatory wear period runs through April 30, 2027. During that time, anyone aboard a boat less than 16 feet long, as well as anyone using a canoe or kayak, must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while recreating on the river.

The requirement is intended to reduce the risk of drowning in cold water, which can pose serious dangers even when the air temperature is relatively warm.

Cold-water shock can occur quickly, particularly when someone unexpectedly falls into the water. It can happen in water temperatures above 50 degrees, potentially leaving swimmers struggling to stay afloat and reach safety.

Wearing a life jacket provides buoyancy to help keep a person afloat and can reduce the risk of inhaling water after an unexpected fall. It also provides insulation that can help slow heat loss.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has more information about the mandatory cold-weather life jacket requirement and additional cold-water safety tips on its website.
