An Emmy-winning television writer whose work helped shape The Daily Show with Jon Stewart died Sunday in a car crash in Millrift, Pennsylvania. Kevin Bleyer was 54.

His family said the accident occurred on a rural road in Pike County where he had a country home, Variety reported.

His wife, Nella Vera, announced his death in a statement posted to her Instagram page.

“I am devastated, heartbroken, shattered,” Vera wrote. “My heart has a hole in it that will never be filled.”

Bleyer spent nine years writing for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, earning four Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on the program. He also received a Writers Guild Award and a Peabody Award.

Before joining The Daily Show, Bleyer wrote for Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and worked on programs hosted by Dennis Miller.

His career extended beyond television comedy. Bleyer helped write speeches for former President Barack Obama and former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. He also authored books and plays and worked as a writer and producer for NBC’s Today show and CNN.

Vera wrote on Instagram that the couple met in 2010 at a production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at the Public Theater in New York. They bonded over their shared interest in political comedy, began dating in 2015 and married in June 2025.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have shared the past decade with such a brilliant, complicated, funny, stubborn, and wonderful man. He had many public accomplishments and awards throughout his long and successful career, but to me, he was my soulmate, my partner in crime, and the one who made life so much more fun,” she wrote.

She encouraged donations in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association’s New York City chapter, where she said Bleyer had volunteered.
