Garnet Health in partnership with Hudson Valley Cancer Services Program will be offering free mammograms to qualified individuals. The screenings will take place Saturday, October 24 at Garnet Health Medical Center (707 East Main Street, Middletown) and on Wednesday, October 28, at Garnet Health Medical Center – Catskills (68 Harris Bushville Road, Harris).
According to the New York State Department of Health, each year, nearly 18,000 women in the state are diagnosed with breast cancer. Nearly 2,300 New Yorkers lose their lives to the disease annually, making it the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among females in the state.
Current guidelines recommend that women between the ages of 40-74 seek mammograms every other year.
The Garnet Health free mammogram program is intended for those who are uninsured or underinsured and living in Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Dutchess, Putnam, or Westchester Counties. While the screenings are intended for women between the ages of 40-65, individuals under the age of 40 with higher risk may also qualify.
Delilah Socci, Garnet Health Community Health Manager, says that those interested in the breast screening program who are unable to attend either of the screenings should contact a Garnet Health patient navigator for scheduling.
Appointment slots for October 24 and 28 are available at garnethealth.org/freemammograms.
