Motorists traveling between Callicoon, New York, and Damascus, Pennsylvania, should prepare for a temporary closure of the Callicoon Bridge next week as work continues on a major rehabilitation project.
The New York State Department of Transportation announced that the bridge, also known as Interstate Bridge No. 7, will be closed to all vehicle traffic beginning at approximately 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15. The closure could last up to 48 hours. If weather or other conditions delay the work, the closure will instead begin on Thursday, July 16.
The Callicoon Bridge spans the Delaware River, connecting Bridge Street in the hamlet of Callicoon in Sullivan County with State Route 1016 in Damascus Township, Pennsylvania.
According to NYSDOT, the temporary closure is needed so crews can continue installing concrete on newly constructed bridge spans. The work is part of a $17.8 million rehabilitation project that is scheduled for completion this fall.
The July closure is one of several planned during the 2026 construction season as the bridge replacement project progresses.
During the closure, motorists, including commercial and freight traffic, will be directed to follow signed detours and messages displayed on NYSDOT variable message signs. Pedestrian and bicycle access across the bridge will remain open throughout the closure.
State transportation officials say the rehabilitation project will improve the safety and long-term reliability of the crossing.
