CAIRO, N.Y. — New York State Police have identified the man fatally shot by a trooper Monday night at a Greene County campground as 45-year-old Amir Hamza.

The shooting happened around 8:22 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Whip-O-Will Campground on County Route 31 in the town of Cairo.

State Police say troopers assigned to the Catskill barracks responded after an open-line 911 call in which a possible ongoing domestic incident could be heard in the background.

When troopers arrived, they found a man who had suffered an apparent head injury during a physical altercation. The man told troopers he had been assaulted and directed them to a nearby camper where Hamza was located.

The injured man was taken to Albany Medical Center and was reported to be in stable condition.

According to State Police, troopers approached the camper, knocked on the door and identified themselves as State Police. Hamza then exited and advanced toward a trooper while extending his right arm and pointing what appeared to be a black pistol directly at the trooper.

The trooper moved out of Hamza’s path, drew his department-issued firearm and fired, striking Hamza.

Troopers secured the scene and administered first aid, including CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator. Hamza was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency medical personnel arrived and took over lifesaving efforts.

State Police say the weapon recovered at the scene was a black pistol-style BB gun. The names of the involved troopers have not been released.

The shooting remains under investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the State Police Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
