The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is inviting public comment on proposed repairs to the Route 6 bridge pier over the Delaware River between Matamoras, Pennsylvania, and Port Jervis, New York.
PennDOT will hold an online plans display from Oct. 16 through Nov. 13 to present the proposed work, explain planned traffic controls and gather public questions and concerns.
The project will address deteriorating concrete on the bridge pier and include other preservation work. Planned improvements include repairing concrete and sealing cracks, installing concrete facing around the bottom of the pier, removing accumulated timber debris and adding rock to protect against erosion around the pier.
Crews also will apply a protective coating to the top of the concrete pier and repoint existing stone masonry at Wingwall C.
Construction access will be provided from Water Street in Port Jervis through a temporary access road and causeway extending into the river. No work is planned on the Route 6 roadway, and PennDOT anticipates no traffic impacts on the highway.
During construction, motorists may encounter short-term single-lane closures on Water Street, with flaggers used as needed to protect traffic. Recreational boating will be maintained, and warning signs will direct boaters to safe passage around the work area.
The project will not require permanent right-of-way acquisition, but temporary construction easements will be needed for access. PennDOT does not expect utility impacts. Permanent impacts to the Delaware River will be limited to the placement of rock scour protection around the pier.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2028 and finish by fall 2028.
The plans, detailed project information and an online comment form are available on the PennDOT District 4-0 project webpage.
