Sullivan County residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous household materials during a free collection event scheduled for June 14 at the Monticello Transfer Station.
The residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at the transfer station located at 91 Landfill Drive in Monticello.
Public Works Committee Chair Joe Perrello encouraged residents to take advantage of the event to remove potentially dangerous materials from their homes.
“This is a great time to clean out your household chemicals,” Perrello said in a statement. “These items can be dangerous to people and the environment if stored a long time or just thrown out with the rest of the trash.”
The program is open only to individuals who reside in Sullivan County. Participants must provide a photo ID or other proof of residency. There is no charge to participate, and pre-registration is not required.
County officials said the event is intended to collect and properly manage residentially generated hazardous materials, including herbicides, pesticides, mercury-containing items, cleaning products, pool chemicals, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, paints, solvents, acids, bases, automotive batteries, antifreeze and preservatives.
Officials noted that certain items will not be accepted, including tires, refrigerators, electronics, ammunition, radioactive materials and medical waste.
A second Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is scheduled for Sept. 20 at the same location and during the same hours.
