Ulster County Seeks Input from High School Students with Youth Prevention Survey

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The Ulster County Department of Mental Health is inviting students in grades 9 through 12 to participate in a countywide survey about their experiences with school, family, peers and health behaviors.

The 2026 Ulster County Prevention Survey aims to help county officials better understand the needs of local young people and guide prevention programs and services.

A recent behavioral health needs assessment identified a lack of current local data on youth experiences. County officials say the information is needed to shape prevention efforts, allocate resources and ensure services reflect the needs of young people.

The survey asks students about their perceptions of substance use, risks of harm, peer influence, family expectations, daily stressors and confidence in navigating challenging situations.

Results are anonymous and will be used by the county Department of Mental Health, school districts, community organizations and the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports to inform funding, programming and outreach.

“Listening to our young people is one of the most important steps we can take in building a healthier, more supportive community,” said Katrina Williams, deputy commissioner of the Ulster County Department of Mental Health. “We urge every eligible student to take a few minutes to share their voice.”

The county is conducting the survey in partnership with the Ulster Prevention Council, which has served as the county’s primary prevention organization since 2008. The council provides evidence-based prevention education, early intervention services and community awareness programs. It also will help analyze survey results to identify emerging trends and inform local prevention strategies.

Participation is voluntary, and completing the survey takes approximately 10 minutes.

Students can access the survey through the Ulster County website.
