Residents in Wayne County and nearby communities will have an indoor option for staying active this winter, as Wayne Memorial Hospital again partners with local school districts to open school hallways for evening walkers.

The annual program begins Oct. 12 and runs through April 22, 2027. Walking is available Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., when schools are in session. The program provides heated, secure and well-lit spaces for residents during the colder months.

Participating schools include Damascus, Lakeside and Preston elementary schools; Evergreen and R.D. Wilson elementary schools; Forest City Regional High School; Wallenpaupack South Elementary and Wallenpaupack Area High School; and Western Wayne Middle/High School.

The program is open to community members, but participants must register and follow security procedures. Walkers are required to sign in and out each time they use a school hallway.

People who participated in previous years and still have a walking identification badge must complete a liability waiver and questionnaire to receive this year’s sticker. New participants, and those who have lost their badges, must purchase a $5 identification badge and complete the required paperwork.

Carol Kneier, a co-organizer and Wayne Memorial Hospital Community Relations Manager, says winter weather doesn’t have to interrupt a regular walking routine.

“Cold weather is no reason to stop walking. Going for a stroll strengthens your bones, improves balance, and protects your heart. Bring a friend or family member along to boost your mood and catch up while you clock your steps,” she said..

Participants will receive a welcome letter with information about entrance locations and times. Walks may be canceled because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
